Self-Isolation Effects on Depressed Students

By Trinity White

Quarantine has forced individuals to stay in their houses which might sound a dream for some, is a nightmare for others. Around 13% of students age 12-17 (Newport Academy) suffer from depression, therefore mixing social isolation with depressed individuals does not create a pretty result. Being alone is one of the biggest triggers for depression because it leaves victims alone with their thoughts. As a result, negative thoughts begin to spur and create a

vicious cycle.

Not to mention, being forced to stay home results in people losing motivation to do work or simple tasks which makes them feel unaccomplished and once again fall into the toxic cycle of thoughts. Quarantine may be ideal for others, but it still affects others negatively in profuse ways, therefore it is important to be considerate of them. Distracting the mind in various ways, talking to friends digitally or exercising inside, can help ease a depressed mind and keep everyone else safe.
