HHS Library Adapts To The Challenges of 2021

By Conor Gillingham

This week is National Library Week, so let's take a look at Herndon's fantastic library, and what exciting new changes have been made to make checking out your favorites book even easier!

Lots of our school elements were affected as a part of the pandemic, but none have been as greatly impacted as the library. The librarians, Mrs. Wolfe, Mrs. Dare and Mrs. Sheppard changed the library a lot when the pandemic arose. The library has undergone changes to accommodate the needs of not only in-person students who are back, but also students at home.

The students here in person have a set of restrictions for using the library. One of the most notable is that less people can be in the library, in order to minimize

exposure, “We have it so that a one class Library Intern Ms. Clougherty's

side room should only have around 13 people Book Spine Poetry collection

in it at a time.” That is not the only development that has been implemented; students must also check what seat they have used when exiting so the custodians know what to clean. The checking-out process is also different, as students must wait a while after the book has been returned as a way of keeping everyone safe and preventing COVID-19 from spreading via direct contact.

Online on the other hand, new opportunities are provided with the Herndon library on Destiny. With Destiny, students are able to have an easier time searching for books compared to being in-person. Books can be checked out simply by searching up the title and clicking a few buttons. The check-out process works in much the same way that in person does; students can come to school and pick up their books, which are always disinfected beforehand.

The library has made some great changes to keep the student body safe, by making restrictions for the people in-person and providing new options for those online.
