Recently, Herndon High School hosted their annual Back To School Night, where teachers and club members gathered to welcome parents and students back to school. Parents were able to navigate the school and attend their child’s classes, as well as take a closer look at the clubs and activities available to the students.
With excitement buzzing throughout the building, lots of teachers were ecstatic to be returning to school. Ms. Huffman, the Gay Straight Alliance Club sponser, stated, “I feel that the students appreciate being back to school now more than ever before.” Along with the elation that comes with returning to school, there are also many risk factors that teachers and students remain aware of. “I
feel a little concerned about safety, but I hope that everyone is responsible because face-to-face contact is essential,” Ms. Huffman explained. FCPS’ mask mandate has most certainly been affecting both students and teachers, but it is incredibly essential that everyone follows through with it in order to remain within the building.
Before the parents had to get to class, clubs such as Best Buddies, NJROTC, and Robotics were able to advertise and showcase what their clubs were all about. “Typically, in most clubs you need a skill set to join, but in robotics you can join with no prior experience, it's really a teaching club,” said senior Robotics Club member, Vinayak Sharma. Along with the available clubs, representatives from the classes from ‘22, ‘23, and ‘24 all initiated their own fundraisers to raise money for their class. All money raised goes directly towards school events, such as school dances and graduation. “I think the fundraiser was very successful, we earned a lot of money for our class.” said a ‘23 Class Council member, Chloe Thompson.
“Back To School Night was my first opportunity to meet parents in the Herndon community— you can tell everyone is super supportive and wants our students to succeed. It feels great to be back in person after two years! I knew they shared our excitement.” said new Astronomy & Geosystems teacher, Ms. Garvey.
Back To School Night proved to be very helpful for parents to understand what it is like to be a high school student, providing them with insight into our lives and how a regular day goes at school, and truly exemplifying our school spirit!
