The Real Issue Behind Society Re-Opening

By Victoria Taylor

In the midst of these incredibly uncertain times, there is a huge divide in opinions in this country. Some people feel that society needs to open back up sooner rather than later so as not to risk a further downfall of the economy. Other people, however, feel that society opening up too soon would do more harm than good. We see on the news countless videos and pictures of people protesting the lockdown with signs saying, “I want a haircut” and “My body my rights.”

It is hard to tell which side is the right choice. In these unprecedented circumstances, there really is no telling of how to go about this situation. Senior Emma Simons says, “I understand that people are worried about businesses and how this will affect their jobs and the economy, but it’s not necessary right now. If we open up too early it can make the second wave deadlier and would definitely become uncontrollable.” With this in mind, it’s clear that economic prosperity would be the last on people’s minds if the virus was to get more out of control. If the virus was to spread to even more people, there wouldn’t be anyone to even contribute to the economy. More people would have to stay home sick or in worse cases, die. The physical health of everyone is crucial if we even want to think about going back to the way things were.
