Are We Too Old to Trick or Treat?

By Nandana Rajesh, Staff Writer

As Halloween approaches, a question is bound to pop into the minds of high school students everywhere: are we too old to trick-or-treat? I believe that teenagers should definitely trick-or-treat because it is a long-honored tradition for many families and for our country as a whole.

Often, even after teenagers feel too old to trick-or-treat, they take their younger siblings or go to parties with friends. We took a survey to see exactly what teenagers think about trick-or-treating: 61.5% of responses said that teenagers should trick-or-treat this Halloween, even more astonishing, 0% said that we shouldn’t. Many people also mentioned COVID-19 safety precautions in their answers, including one person who argued “If they wear masks and aren’t older than 15 then yes, [they should go trick-or-treating].” This is a very important point and all teenagers, regardless of whether they trick-or-treat or not, should definitely take precautions this Halloween. Many people also said that they believe that trick-or-treating for teenagers should not be stigmatized, with one person saying that “I think it should be more normalized”. Overall, Halloween is one of the few holidays that almost all children participate in across the nation, and this is not a tradition that we as teenagers should end because of our own self-consciousness. As junior Nathan Voduru said “It’s fun!”.
