On the 20th of December, 2019, President Donald Trump officially announced the creation of the United States Space Force making it the sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. Their mission is to organize, train and equip the United States and allied interests in space, and to provide space capabilities to the joint force. Responsibilities include developing military space professionals, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine for space power, and organizing space forces for our combatant commands.
As President Trump put it himself, just like the land, sea and air, “Space is a war-fighting domain.”As of now, there is only one member of the Space Force, General John Raymond, who is acting as the Chief of Space Operations, a newly created statutory office in the military to command the Space Force.
However, the creation of the Space Force does not come without criticism, many people feel like having a space force is uncanny and unnecessary, others think that it's comical. When President Trump first revealed the Space Force seal on Instagram, people were criticizing its design because it looked like the Star Trek starfleet command logo. George Takei, one of the original actors of the original Star Trek series even shared criticism of his own on Twitter. Famed Astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson said that Trump’s idea of the Space Force is not a weird idea, in fact, Tyson said it was a good idea because he recommended creating a Space Force back in 2001. Just like the Marine Corps under the Department of the Navy, the Space Force will be under the Department of the Air Force.
But many people still ask the question, “Why do we need a Space Force?” “What will it do?” “Doesn’t the Air Force already have what's called the Air Force Space Command?” Well, it certainly seems the public has a way with their criticizing words, but the Space Force will be protecting U.S. and allied interests in space. So now our enemies and adversaries alike have another thing to fear about our country, and that is, the United States Space Force.
