Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie making industry has been slowed down. Many movies weren't being able to go into production due to strict health and safety guidelines, but now, there is one movie that was in production, and it has quite an interesting plot line.
A new movie, titled Songbird, is the first movie about COVID-19. It is set in 2024, where they call the virus “COVID-23” because they are in their fourth year of lockdown. The dystopian society has a strict curfew and tons of laws. The movie focuses on the lives of two characters, Nico (played by KJ Apa) and Sara (played by Sofia Carson), who are in love, but haven't actually met because of the lockdown.
The filming of the movie began on July 8th, and finished just 17 days later. The movie was able to be made quickly because of the limited number of people in public areas. The cast and crew followed all health and safety guidelines throughout production.
This is the first film made about COVID-19, and it makes for a really unique plot. However, it has caused controversy due to the use of the virus in the movie. Also because COVID-19 is a real problem that is going on in society, and it isn't over yet.
For example, @scallywap on twitter said, “Making a ‘dystopian horror movie’ about a horror that is real and happening right now is so tone deaf. And so not what people need. So many people have lost jobs, livelihoods and loved ones due to Covid, and everyone's life has been severely affected.”
COVID is still a problem that is happening right now in the world, so this point is understandable. Despite this controversy, the film does have an interesting plot and a creative storyline. Whether you agree that the movie should be filmed, or not, it is still a creative way to produce a film about a relevant topic.
Songbird will be on demand everywhere on December 11th, 2020. You can watch the trailer for this movie here.
