Should We Separate Artists From Their Art?

These days, especially with the use of social media, artists are much more than just their art. Because of this, it's becoming a much bigger deal for us consumers to support the right artists.

An artist can make art that is valuable and not be someone who should be promoted. One example of this type of artist is Kanye West, who was an incredible influence on the hip hop and rap industry, with music that almost everyone in America recognized. However, he has recently made anti-Semitic remarks and even wore a shirt with a white supremacist slogan on it. These factors make him not worth supporting; with both our money and attention.

While the huge impact of his music is undeniable, it's also evident that he does not care about the people he is affecting with his actions.

However, supporting Kanye's music is different from supporting Kanye himself. This goes for many other artists; you can still enjoy their art and not support their actions as a person by avoiding doing things like giving them money and promoting their products.

There’s no way to completely ban everything someone has done throughout their career, but when they use their platform to discriminate and spread toxicity, then there's no reason to be giving them monetary support.
