This past Sunday, April 24th, Herndon Elementary School celebrated its 60th anniversary. Alumni and former teachers joined current students and staff in a celebration of our town's beloved elementary school.
The celebrations were huge and ran across the playground and blacktop behind the school, complete with pizza, black and red cupcakes and an ice cream truck. There were also a couple of blow-up slides that were very popular with the elementary students. Despite the heat, there was a great turnout, and plenty of old friends to greet. The event lasted from 1:00-3:00 p.m. with speeches from both former FCPS superintendent Dr. Scott Brabrand and current principal of HES, Elizabeth Baxter. The event also celebrated the new grant HES received to create an outdoor learning space for classes to use. Originally, the 60 year celebration was to be held in 2021 but was postponed to 2022 due to COVID.
Luckily, the event was still held to celebrate 60 years from the opening, and it was a great success. We had a great time catching up with our old teachers and seeing the new class of HES students. We wish Herndon Elementary many more happy years!
