The Met Gala is known worldwide for its glamorous exhibition of designers, and exclusive guest list. This year, the Gala is more anticipated than ever, as it was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic and has been scheduled this year for September 13th.
Since 1948, there have been a variety of noteworthy moments and controversies, all of which have unraveled on the red carpet.
The Met Gala looks are famously known for their iconic, yet never before seen attire, varying from sheer suits to 20-feet long dresses. These pieces shape the outlook for future modern fashion trends. Noteworthy looks include:
Harry Styles wearing Gucci in 2019 Cher wearing Bob Mackie in 1974
Rihanna wearing Guo Pei in 2015
Last but certainly not least, Kylie and Kendall Jenner wearing Versace in 2019
(Fun Fact: It is rumored that Kylie and Kendall's dresses
are related to the suits in the movie Dumb and Dumber)
Harry certainly has style, but I think we can all agree that his co-host in 2019, Lady Gaga, stole the show. Her outfit, or four, is one of the most evocative looks we’ve seen on a carpet. She gave a staggering show as she stripped three layers of clothing, definitely a performance to remember.
This year's theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” We are always looking forward to seeing the fashion line be crossed in ways never thought possible, and the Met Gala is the place for that to happen. The bar is set very high for these celebrities and what they will show up wearing for this year's event. At the Met Gala, anything and everything is possible.
This year it is rumored that TikToker Addison Rae Easterling and Youtuber Emma Chamberlain have been invited to this year’s Met Gala, and the publicists for A-list celebrities are not too happy about it. To make matters worse, an Instagram account with the handle “_metgala2021” released a guest list full of influencers, none of whom were referenced in any other sources’ speculated lists. The list had many spelling errors including names for the D’Amelio sisters, Jennifer Lopez, and even the name of the event. A few days later the account posted a seating chart that had influencer James Charles sitting at the same table as stars like Taylor Swift and The Weekend, causing Charles’ name to trend on twitter. No official guest list has been released by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, who hosts the annual event. It has already been declared that Zendaya will not be attending this year's Gala due to her conflicting schedule with the HBO original Euphoria.
Although Kim, Kendall, Kylie and Kris Jenner have made many appearances at the Met Gala over the years, Khloe has yet to be invited. According to Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief at Vogue who also makes the guest list, Khloe is just “too C list to be there.” Kourtney received an invite for the first time in 2019 but declined to stay home with Khloe.
