After receiving tremendous pressure from fans, alumni, and corporate sponsors including FedEx, Washington’s NFL Team announced July 3rd that they will thoroughly review their controversial team nickname. On Monday, July 13th, the review came to a conclusion. The Redskins announced in a press release that they will retire their longtime nickname and logo. Many expected this to happen especially because of current events. Owner Dan Snyder said in 2013 he would never change the name.
ESPN's Adam Schefter said the team is expected to have a new nickname and logo very soon and before training camp which is scheduled to start July 28th. Usually when a team changes its name and logo, the process takes 12-18 months. But in this case, as of now Washington has only 2 weeks!
2020 has been a year of change for the Washington Football Franchise. Many fans are sad to see the name go because it’s been a huge part of their history but are also excited for a new era and promising future under new Head Coach Ron Rivera. Fans have been speculating all over social media on what the new name will be. ESPN’s Redskins Reporter John Keim was told that the team colors will most likely remain Burgundy and Gold. Multiple sources have said the team could keep their longtime acronym “HTTR,” which would point to the new name starting with an 'R'.
The team has so many names to choose from, like Redwolves, Warriors, Redhawks, and Redtails. They could also decide to go without a name and just be called the Washington Football Club because of limited time. It is always fun to speculate, so here are a couple logos and uniform concepts that fans seem to like.

The Redwolves name was at one point trending on Twitter as many fans love the idea of howling in the stands. Many players support this name, including QB Dwayne Haskins and DE Jonathan Allen.

Though the team would have to compete with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors on legal and trademark issues, the Warriors name has become very popular. Coach Rivera said recently that he wants the new name to honor the military. Future controversy could be the reason the organization avoids this name.
Another name idea, the Redtails, would honor the WW2 Tuskegee Airmen, also known as the Redtails. They were the 1st African-American military aviators in the U. S. Armed Forces.
