As many people already know, the Olympics have been pushed to 2021 because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Most people agree it’s the right thing to do, but what does it mean for the hardworking athletes with a once in a lifetime opportunity? What does it mean for Tokyo’s economy? These questions unfortunately surround the decision of postponing the Olympics.
This might have been the first or last chance for an athlete to compete in the Olympics, and they might feel like their hard work was all for nothing. This could also bring problems to Tokyo because many sponsors were paying to support the Olympics, and the city needed profits to help the Olympics happen. The same sponsors might not be able to pay money next year if they lose too much money from Covid-19, which means Tokyo might lose money for the Olympics cost.
With no Olympics this year, athletes will have to retrain themselves and the world will have to wait a whole year to see their favorite athletes compete against each other again. It does stink for the sports world, but it’s the right decision as the world tries to recover from the pandemic. We can still support those athletes in the Olympics as they retrain for next year, and we can get through this together and appreciate the past Olympics that made us all excited and grateful for sports.
