Herndon Volleyball, Is This Their Year?

By: Kendall Gillingham & Madison Raikes, Staff Writers

This year the Herndon varsity volleyball team is heading toward a district championship, with an impressive record of eight wins and two losses! This season the Herndon volleyball program had over 50 people in total come and try out. This year the varsity team is one of the best teams the volleyball program has has yet; our solid starting line up includes #9 junior Phoebe Adams, #6 senior Katie Cazenas, #8 junior Ella Watt, #4 senior Jaden Hauptmann, and #3 senior Akasha Anderson. Anderson has committed to Auburn University and will be playing volleyball with them next year!

Our varsity volleyball team has played against eight teams including Centreville, South Lakes, Wakefield, Westfield, W&L, Yorktown, Marshall, McLean and Langley. Herndon has swept six games and has lost 8 out of 32 total sets. However Herndon did lose to the reigning regional champs, Langley. While they did lose the game 0-3 all three sets were very close and one even went into overtime. This team has had an amazing season so far and they are still on the right track to win the district championship.

This past week the Herndon volleyball teams had some ups and downs. The varsity team lost to McLean at home and beat Washington and Liberty on the road. Shoutout to freshman Shylah Swope who had great game overall against Washington and Liberty. The Herndon JV team lost at home against McLean and away at Washington and Liberty. Congratulations to Aanya Diaz with her incredible blocks and hits against Washington and Liberty. The freshman team lost at home to McLean and won on the road against Washington and Liberty. Stella Greeves had multiple aces against Washington and Liberty to end the game The freshman team’s record is 3-6, and JV team is 2-7. While they may not have come out with the best results, all the games were close and hard-fought by our Lady Hornets. These teams have many upcoming players that will continue to be extraordinary in the HHS volleyball program!

A Weekend Of Personal Records

By: Kat Herrera, Staff Writer

This weekend's cross country Octoberfest meet was one for the books! 59 teams all from different schools competed to get their teams on the mark. The meet was held last Saturday, October 2nd at Great Meadows Plains. This year's fall celebration 5k race was named as “Octoberfest,” and delivered a very challenging course. The route ranged from steep hills to foot-deep creeks, and made for one of the harder courses of the season. Many goals and victories were won among both the girls and boys races. For the girls varsity race, Junior Gillian Bushée came in second place with a whopping 18:14 minute time. Herndon’s stand out performance made for a race well done and we cannot wait to see how their approaching district races will go.
