FCPS Requiring Proof of Vaccination for School Athletics

By Brody Bryan, Sports Reporter

FCPS has a new policy for all student athletes, and it comes with a very clear message: get vaccinated. Taking effect on November 8th, all students who participate in athletic activities will be required to show proof of vaccination, otherwise they will have to sit out for the season. The requirement was put into place as an effort to keep students safe and schools running without any disruption, said FCPS Superintendent Scott Brabrand. Due to the requirement taking effect November 8th, students participating in fall sports will not be required to show proof of vaccination. However, students participating in winter and/or spring sports will have to follow the requirement. This is the first requirement of its kind surrounding COVID-19 and school sports in northern Virginia, however it may not be the last, as Arlington County Schools are also considering the requirement. This policy comes shortly after FCPS adopted a policy for all staff, saying that by late October all employees must be either vaccinated or submit regular negative tests for the virus.

Herndon Football Team at Centreville, 8/27

Following the announcement, the Herndon Football team was notified of a new COVID-19 outbreak, requiring all players to quarantine themselves at home. Last Friday’s game at Centreville was the site of the transmission, affecting both Herndon and Centreville’s teams. And for many Hornets, there is not much joy to be had being stuck at home again. “I believe the situation was handled poorly by the staff of FCPS schools and health departments,” said an anonymous Herndon Football player, “I understand us being home to not get people sick. However while we are home we get no help or direction, AKA virtual learning while we are out. Also FCPS staff failed to inform our teachers about us being out, and now we all have unexcused absences.” Herndon Football’s COVID-19 delay may last up to two weeks; hopefully our Hornets will be back on the field in time for their home game against South Lakes on September 17th.
