FCPS graduate Maame Biney has reached her Olympic dream for her second appearance in the Olympics. Born January 28, 2000, she graduated from South Lakes in 2018. This short-track speed skater prepared herself for the 2022 winter Olympics at just 22 years old. After placing first in her 500m race for the US Short Track Olympic Trials, Biney headed on into Beijing for the official race. Biney was announced an official competitor back in the 2018 Olympics, and became the first black woman to make the US short track speed skating team. Since then she has improved her skills and mindset, and was hoping to be successful for her race.

Biney started her skating journey at a young age, when she was just 6 years old she began speed skating and from then on she continued in the rink, gaining more confidence on the ice. She is now known for her bubbly personality and big smile, often living by the quote, “laugh until you can’t laugh anymore.”

While her road to success hasn’t been easy, it has certainly been rewarding. Her recent success in the trial race won her much attention from fans waiting to watch the events. When asked about what she learned from her first Olympic race, Biney said, “I’ve learned that I just can’t afford to underestimate anyone, and I just have to go out there and do my best.” With a positive outlook on this year's Olympics, Biney’s fans were beyond excited to see how she did for the race.
