2020 NFL Draft

By Ana Escamilla

History was made in the sports world on April 23-25, with the production of the first-ever virtual NFL (National Football League) Draft. An event that usually takes place in grand Las Vegas, showcases rookie football players coming out of college who are up for grabs! The way the draft order works is the worst team from the previous season has the first pick and the super bowl champions get the last pick. Teams can also trade players to other teams in exchange for that team’s picks; therefore, you have more picks in the draft but you did lose a player ( the quality of the player you traded will increase or decrease the value of the pick traded to you by another team). There are seven total rounds over the course of 3 days coming in at a total of 255 picks overall.

The top pick this year was Joe Burrow, a quarterback coming out of LSU (Louisiana State University) to play for the Cincinnati Bengals. The Washington Redskins followed with the second overall pick and drafted defensive end, Chase Young, from Ohio State. With the third pick, also from Ohio State, cornerback Jeff Okudah was drafted to the Detroit Lions.

Finishing off the NFL Draft, many reporters and NFL writers began to rank which team they think gained the most out of the draft and did it strategically. Overall it was voted that the Baltimore Ravens or Dallas Cowboys made the most out of the 2020 draft. Writer Brian Baldinger wrote, “General manager Eric DeCosta did a masterful job finding good value and addressing needs from top to bottom” about Baltimore’s outcome. Maurice Jones-Drew, another writer from the NFL, also had good words about the result of the Cowboys’ picks: “The Cowboys re-solidified their spot at the top of the NFC East”. It is hopeful that the Cowboys will come back from their average last season with higher and better stats.

Although there is no real “winner” of a draft, it’s up to these rookies to see if they can put on a show, help bring their team to the Super Bowl, and kiss the Lombardi trophy while saying “We’re going to Disney!”
